The expedition
This small-group expedition is designed for photographers and nature lovers who want to experience two of Colombia's most visually distinct regions in a single, carefully paced itinerary. The program is planned within the official Caño Cristales season and optimized for the strongest river conditions, while also capturing the early phase of intense wildlife activity in the Eastern Llanos.
The journey begins with a smooth arrival in Bogotá before flying to La Macarena to access the legendary "Rainbow River." Our photographic focus there centers on clean compositions, reflective pools, textured rock formations, and the vivid aquatic plants that create Caño Cristales' signature reds, greens, and golds. Rather than rushing through a checklist of stops, we build in flexible pacing to revisit the strongest scenes when light and conditions are best — more time to refine framing, work different focal lengths, and return to a location for improved angles or changing water levels.
The second half of the expedition transitions to the wide-open Llanos for a true safari-style experience. Working with multiple 4x4 vehicles and a photo-first schedule, we prioritize prime shooting windows in the savanna — often in warm early and late light — while targeting the region's signature wildlife, expansive skies, and classic wetland and grassland habitats. Night opportunities may be included when conditions and logistics allow.
Throughout the journey, participants are supported by certified expedition leaders and local naturalist guides, combining photographic coaching with on-the-ground expertise. Single-occupancy accommodations help ensure comfort, rest, and a consistent daily rhythm so you can stay focused on making images.

Day by day
The route, unfolded.
Day 01
Arrival in Bogotá
Private transfer from the airport to your hotel in Bogotá. Check in, rest, and prepare for the journey ahead. Welcome meal with the team to review the itinerary, pacing, and photographic priorities for the trip.
Day 02
Flight to La Macarena · Lodge arrival
Morning transfer to the airport and domestic flight from Bogotá to La Macarena. Upon arrival we transfer to our eco-lodge on the edge of the Serranía de La Macarena, located just minutes from the access points to Caño Cristales. Afternoon orientation walk and first scouting of nearby light and compositions.
### Day 03 to 05 — Landscape photography at Caño Cristales
Three full days dedicated to photographing the "River of Five Colors" at its seasonal peak. We work different sectors of the river — including waterfalls, mirror pools, and cascades framed by red Macarenia clavigera — and revisit the strongest scenes under changing light. The flexible pacing allows for early starts, midday breaks during harsh light, and golden-hour returns to refine compositions, experiment with focal lengths, and capture the river's full color palette.
Day 06
La Macarena → Bogotá → Yopal · Hato La Aurora
Early departure to La Macarena Airport for a morning flight to Bogotá and a connecting flight to Yopal. Our Llanos team meets us in the afternoon for the scenic four-hour drive across open savanna to an eco-lodge inside the Hato La Aurora Natural Reserve.
Day 07
Hato La Aurora · Savannah grasslands
Full day exploring the savanna grasslands and gallery forests of Hato La Aurora by 4x4. Targets include Capybara, Spectacled Caiman, Roseate Spoonbill, Hoatzin, and the chance to find Green Anaconda in seasonal pools. Photography sessions are timed around early and late light.
Day 08
Hato La Aurora · Colombian Safari
A true safari-style day moving between flooded grasslands, riverbanks, and forest edges. Subjects include White-tailed Deer, Red Howler Monkey, Capybara families, raptors over open skies, and a wide selection of wading birds. Night drives may be included when conditions allow.
Day 09
Hato La Aurora · Wildlife photography
Final field day at the reserve dedicated to building your strongest images. We focus on signature species — Giant Anteater, Southern Tamandua, armadillos, and large mammals — alongside sweeping landscapes of the Eastern Llanos at sunrise and sunset.
Day 10
Departure day
Early transfer from the reserve to Yopal for the flight back to Bogotá. We expect to arrive in Bogotá in the late afternoon (subject to airline schedules), where the program officially concludes upon arrival at the airport for onward travel.
