Day-by-day itinerary
March 4 — Arrival in Bogotá & Jardín Botánico
The clients had arrived in Bogotá a few days early, so Day 1 — originally reserved for airport reception — was put to use with a visit to the Jardín Botánico de Bogotá, arranged jointly with our Australian partner and Hotel Habitel Select. A relaxed first outing yielded 15 species. Itinerary change (our Australian partner): botanical garden visit added; Day 1 had been planned as transfer-only. Accommodation: Hotel Habitel Select, Bogotá.
March 5 — Coffee Region & Recinto del Pensamiento
Early flight Bogotá → Pereira, then straight to Recinto del Pensamiento in Manizales for hummingbird feeders and butterfly gardens. ~30 species recorded on a productive afternoon. Itinerary change (Ocampo Expeditions): stop added so birding could begin on arrival day rather than the following morning. Accommodation: Hotel Quo Quality, Manizales.
March 6 — Río Blanco Nature Reserve

March 20 — Muisca Birding
The original plan of visiting Bosque La Guajira Nature Reserve was replaced with Muisca Birding in the same sector near Guasca (Cundinamarca) due to access-road conditions. Comparable highland targets and 20 species recorded. Itinerary change (Ocampo Expeditions): site substitution for access-road reasons; same target species. Accommodation: Hotel Habitel Select.

Highlights
- Buffy Helmetcrest holding territory on frailejones at Brisas (Los Nevados).
- Multicolored Tanager at La Florida, Km 18.
- Andean Cock-of-the-Rock lek session at Finca Doña Dora from 1–2 m.
- Flame-faced Tanager at Parque Verde y Agua.
- Laguna de Sonso — 86 species in a single day, the top site of the trip.
- Cultural add-on at the Museo del Oro, a strong non-birding day that the clients valued.
Notes from the field
This itinerary balanced classic Coffee Region cloud-forest sites with the wetland and dry-forest contrast of the Cauca Valley, and closed with the highland sites around Bogotá. Several days were tuned in the field — adding Recinto del Pensamiento on arrival, returning to Río Bravo on transfer day, substituting Muisca Birding for Bosque La Guajira, and inserting the Museo del Oro — all of which lifted the trip without disrupting the targets agreed with our Australian partner.
If you're a tour operator planning a similar Colombia circuit for your clients, we're glad to share planning notes on request.
